Welcome to Smartphones Unlocked, my new monthly column designed to explain the ins and outs of smartphones to help you better understand how they work.

The world of smartphones is fast-paced and can sometimes be confusing and difficult to keep track of all the new technology in these devices, particularly if you're new to them, so if there are any topics you'd like to see covered here, please feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]

According to an email obtained by ZDNet, Samsung will be moving to a monthly schedule for software updates, meaning unlocked phones should get regular Android security updates in a timely manner. “However, we have now resolved the challenges; and we are committed to releasing security updates for those devices on a monthly basis.” That means unlocked Galaxy phones won’t be regarded as second-class citizens anymore and should receive updates at least as fast (and perhaps even faster) than the carrier-locked ones.

In a reply to an update query from Samsung Mobile Security Technologies, the company admitted to a less-than-ideal schedule and resolved to fix it: “Due to various circumstances, we have been releasing security updates for unlocked (open) Galaxy devices in the U. Samsung didn’t announce a time frame for the switch, but said the March Android update (which hopefully will include the Nougat one as well) is coming “soon.” Achievement unlocked: If you own an unlocked Galaxy phone, you know full well how frustrating it is to be at the back of the line for updates.

This can include phones only distributed in certain countries, or with features that are not available on all carriers.

People also don't need to wait for a contract to expire to buy a new phone; they can remove the SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) card from an existing phone and insert it into a new one when they are ready for a replacement.

The good news is nowadays software updates allow you to get the latest version of a mobile operating system even if you don't have the newest phone model.

It is worth noting, however, that the solution that Pod2g developed confirmed to be effective only for i Phones, and i Pads equipped with an A4 processor like the first-gen i Pad, i Phone 3GS, i Phone 4, and Apple TV.

i Phone owners who rely on the Ultrasn0w unlock still should be cautious with upgrading to retain the unlockable baseband.

Most carriers only supply service to a particular country or area; when traveling outside the coverage zone, the mobile phone user will have to "roam" on another carrier's network, which often comes with a high fee.

To avoid roaming fees, a person can buy a SIM card from a local carrier at his destination and insert it, preserving all his existing phone settings but getting a new number and a local calling plan.
